I understand you might feel unsure about meeting with a dietitian, especially if you struggle with any type of eating disorder behaviors. I want you to know that you aren't alone, so many clients feel this way in the beginning. I am here to create a supportive, non-judgmental, and safe environment by first spending the time to get to know you and understand what you need on your individual journey to reach your nutritional goals. I love educating my clients on the gut-brain connection to support any co-occurring digestive issues that may be present and further complicating your journey towards making peace with food.

As an eating disorder specialized registered dietitian, it's one of my core values for every one of my clients to feel their voice is respected and their needs are honored during the recovery process. I will support you with your nutrition targets while being mindful of psychological and medical comorbidities that can complicate nutrition in recovery. I tailor all recommendations in consideration of your food sensitivities, variety limitations, and GI issues (whether due to the eating disorder or preexisting), such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating, and intolerances.

Nutrition Coaching Nutritionists and Dietitians

How does nutrition coaching work?

Nutrition coaching works by providing personalized guidance to individuals aiming to improve their dietary habits and overall wellbeing. Nutrition coaches tend to take a holistic approach, addressing not only nutrition but also physical and emotional health. They help clients develop tailored nutrition plans that fit their lifestyle and health goals, educate them on how diet impacts physical and mental health, and offer ongoing support and accountability to keep them on track. However, given the varied educational backgrounds and credentialing of nutrition coaches, it's essential for clients to inquire about a coach's specific qualifications and approach to ensure they find the right fit for their needs.

Who should see a nutrition coach?

Nutrition coaching is ideal for individuals who are generally healthy but seek to make gradual lifestyle changes to enhance their physical and mental health. It is also suitable for those interested in preventing chronic diseases, especially if they are predisposed to conditions like diabetes or hypertension. However, nutrition coaching may not be the best fit for individuals with specific diet-related medical conditions, as these cases often require the expertise of a Registered Dietitian or other healthcare professional with more advanced training and credentials in dietetics.

What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutrition coach?

The terms "nutrition coach" and "dietitian" might seem synonymous, but there are significant credential differences between these roles. A registered dietitian (RD) or registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) must earn at least a graduate degree from an accredited program, complete a supervised practice program, pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration exam, and engage in continuing education. These credentials are regulated by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the largest nutrition-related organization in the country. In contrast, the title "nutrition coach" does not require any formal education or credentials; anyone can use the title, including those with minimal or no formal training in nutrition. While there are certification programs for nutrition coaches, the rigor and academic requirements for these programs can vary widely.

What does a nutrition coaching session involve?

Nutrition coaching sessions are tailored to a client's individual goals, so sessions generally involve the nutrition coach assisting the client in ensuring they are making progress toward these goals. Sessions typically involve reviewing food and exercise journals from the past week, setting new goals for upcoming sessions, and providing personalized feedback. Nutrition coaches will also educate clients on diet-related topics, such as ensuring adequate fruit and vegetable intake, or they may offer practical resources like recipes or mindful eating exercises to try on their own. Generally, the focus of these sessions is on creating sustainable lifestyle changes that support overall health and wellbeing.
