Is Osteopathy Right for Me?

Osteopathy is most appropriate when you have a problem with your musculoskeletal system, such as back pain, a sports injury, a stiff neck, or arthritis. Your doctor will work with you to diagnose the problem, use hands-on manipulations to help build strength and flexibility, and provide guidance on how to alter your daily routine and exercises to speed the healing, preventing further problems.

One technique often used is trigger (or myodysneuric) point therapy, which relieves knots (triggers) by applying pressure, calming nerves, and releasing endorphins. And with joint mobilization, osteopaths teach exercises and stretches to help patients reach full range of motion. Cranial osteopathy manipulates fluid in the head and spinal cord to reduce tension.

If you want a doctor who takes the time to understand your whole body and provide a holistic mode of treatment that accounts for your lifestyle, osteopathy may be the best choice. The osteopath emphasizes the body’s inherent capacity to defend and repair itself. When disruption of normal body function occurs, or environmental changes prevent the body from functioning regularly, disease ensues. These professionals believe somatic symptoms are not only the manifestations of disease but are factors that contribute to disease itself.
